“Stop believing the myth that we are born to be coupled. We aren’t. We are born to kick the world’s ass all by ourselves.”

~ A. S. King, Dear Heartbreak

DEAR HEARTBREAK is out today!

My dears, this book….oh, this book. If you love Cheryl Strayed’s Dear Sugar, then this is for you. If you’ve ever taken a breath, ever had your heart broken, ever needed a shoulder to cry on, a good laugh, some hard-won wisdom…this is for you.

Side note: I do believe this makes a most excellent holiday gift for the teen or adult reader in your life. A quick read, lotsa heart, pretty as a picture (that cover!), and lots of diversity. Ahem. 🙂

Get the book. Grab some tissues. Fall in love with yourself.

About the book:

This is a book about the dark side of love: the way it kicks your ass, tears out your heart, and then forces you to eat it, bite by bloody bite. If you’ve felt this way, you’re not alone…

In this powerful collection, YA authors answer real letters from teens all over the world about the dark side of love: dating violence, break-ups, cheating, betrayals, and loneliness. This book contains a no-holds-barred, raw outpouring of the wisdom these authors have culled from mining their own hearts for the fiction they write. Their responses are autobiographical, unflinching, and filled with love and hope for the anonymous teen letter writers.

Featuring Adi Alsaid, Becky Albertalli, Libba Bray, Heather Demetrios, Amy Ewing, Zach Fehst, Gayle Forman, Corey Ann Haydu, Varian Johnson, A.S. King, Nina LaCour, Kim Liggett, Kekla Magoon, Sarah McCarry, Sandhya Menon, Cristina Moracho, Jasmine Warga, and Ibi Zoboi.

:: Some of my favorite quotes from the book by our YA authors ::

This experience doesn’t need to be a lesson. It doesn’t need to make you strong and brave. You’re already strong and brave.
 ~ Becky Albertalli

Nobody wants to feel loss and hurt, and I’m not going to ever tell you that hurt is noble. Hurt is hurt. And it can hurt like a motherfucker.
 ~ Gayle Forman

The best love story is the one where you love yourself.  ~ Nina LaCour

You belong in the world. ~ Adi Alsaid

We have to be who we are. Who else can we possibly be? ~ Libba Bray

No one has their shit totally together. Ever. Anyone who says they do is lying.

~ A.S. King

You don’t need anyone to tell you that you’re kickass. You are kickass. You always have been.

~ Zach Fehst & Heather Demetrios 🙂

But here’s how I know I’m going to be okay: I’m writing this.

Below is a poem made from the titles of the letters each YA author wrote to the teens who wrote to Heartbreak. We wanted to leave our readers with a little something to stick in their back pockets when Heartbreak comes to call, and I pass it along to all of you–some light for the new year.

Happy holidays, everyone! I hope you will discover what I did as I worked on this book with all these amazing teens and authors: that the greatest gift you could ever give yourself is to realize that you are worthy of love, just as you are. And that giving love to yourself makes you as kickass as all those warriors in the books you read.

Keep fighting the good fight, love ninjas.
